BLUE MAGAZINE
We are so thrilled to see the inaugural exhibition "Homecoming" on Ithakis Street in Athens featured in "blue " Magazine, the Aegean Airlines inflight magazine. The feature discusses this special project curated by Polina Kosmadaki and the establishment of the Salon and Private Artspace on Ithakis Street in Kypseli, Athens.
"Homecoming: In the heart of Kypseli, Matthias Arndt is inaugurating a new, private, hybrid art space - a residence that functions simultaneously as a place of creation, gathering and dialogue - with the exhibition “Homecoming,” drawing inspiration from 19th-century salons. After more than three decades in which he influenced the international contemporary art scene mainly from his home in Australia, the German art advisor and collector is returning to Europe, choosing Athens as his base. His decision was shaped by a striking yet long-abandoned apartment in an Art Deco building at 31 Ithakis Street, which had been the home of Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseas Elytis for over fifteen years. The space, Arndt notes, gave him an immediate sense of belonging. “What’s most important for me is to be where I can contribute, and where what I do fits into the fabric of the city.” The inaugural group exhibition will mark this new beginning, bringing together some of his favourite works, including pieces by Jannis Kounellis, Thomas Hirschhorn and Sophie Calle, alongside figures from the contemporary Greek art scene such as Jannis Varelas, Maro Michalakakos, Ilias Papailiakis and Ioanna Pantazopoulou. Curated by Arndt himself and by Polina Kosmadaki, who oversaw the Greek section, the exhibition explores the notion of “home” as a place of memory, encounter and creative exchange.” - Ksenia Georgiadou
